Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are symbols of happiness and good luck. I have made over a thousand Ruby-throated Hummingbirds through the years, making it my most popular carving. They are whittled, painted and then mounted on mostly driftwood.

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird measures approximately 2¼”; the Antillean Crested Hummingbird measures 3”. The overall height of each piece will vary depending on the size of its mounting.

Puppies

I am best known for my dogs and the puppies are probably the most popular. I have been making them for 35 years. They are smaller versions of my larger dogs and have my unique style of being built rather than made from a single piece of wood. They are made up of individual pieces cut with a bandsaw, then textured with a chainsaw and glued together. They are then stained or painted; the stained pieces are sealed with a clear varnish. Each is 12” tall, signed, dated and numbered.

Orbs

Orbs are spherically shaped objects of heavenly origin. I have revisited this form over and over again throughout my career. These latest wooden orbs are built rather than carved from a single piece. No lathes or templates were used, contributing to forms which vary in shape and symmetry, all attempting to imitate, as best I can, what we might find in nature.

The woods are chosen to show how important each tree is in our lives. Whether leaders against climate change, supportive of biodiversity, endemic or invasive they are all indicators of the health of our environment. I hope mine invite stillness, patience and reflection.

My orbs include white ash (the threatened), Elm (the destroyed), Buckthorn (the invasive), red cedar, sugar maple and sumac. Some represent kindness and peace (Betty's 100 year old Macintosh), others history and industry (George Benton's Barn, walnut and cherry) and still others connect to backyards (weeping willows, honeysuckles and pine). All tell a story.
